Press release: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Out of the Darkness Walk
For Immediate Release American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to Host Greater Sacramento Area Out of the Darkness Campus walk Sacramento, CA 3/12/10 – The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will host a local Out of the Darkness Campus Walk fundraising event for the Greater Sacramento area to raise money for suicide awareness and prevention programs. In the United States, a suicide occurs every 16 minutes, claiming more than 33,000 lives each year. Suicide is the leading cause of death among college students and is the third leading cause for youth ages 15-24; with adolescent depression, both undiagnosed and/or untreated as the number one cause. AFSP funds vital research and increases awareness in the public in the areas of research, screening, treatment, and support which can help us to better understand and prevent suicide. Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are events taking place around the country with all proceeds benefiting AFSP. Thousands of students nationwide participate in these walks in order to help raise money for research and educational programs aimed at preventing suicide, raising awareness regarding depression, and providing much needed support for the survivors of suicide loss. Many of these are participating in memory of a friend or loved one. “The sense of community and shared purpose at the Out of the Darkness Walks is truly inspiring, and comforting . . . “ - Ryan, Out of the Darkness Walk participant For more information about AFSP’s goals and programs, other Out of the Darkness Community Walks around the country, or to volunteer, please visit www.afsp.org or visit us on facebook! |
